The threat of Cancer

When I got up on Friday (the 13th of March), I slowly put together a list of activities I intended to knock out before the start of the weekend.

Rhiannon returns on Monday after spending 2 weeks in Portland to oversee a store opening.  Things around the apartment the past two weeks have been...   "different",

I'm incredibly happy however to have both Amos and Elliot around the apartment to keep me company while she's gone...   I came home a little early on Friday to get repair crews over to address an issue with my door, some faulty lights and a leaky faucet.

I opened the door and for some strange reason - Elliot didn't come rushing down the steps.  He slowly made his way down and he cowered for some strange reason.  I attempted to walk him around my apartment complex, but for some strange reason he couldn't really find the energy to walk.

I took him back to the apartment and had to help him up the steps.  When I got him up stairs I quickly looked around the place to see if he may have injured himself on something but everything around the apartment appeared normal.   I tried to give him a snack but he wouldn't really engage with me.

I sat across from him and asked him if he wanted to go for a "Ride".  If I ever say this word to him, he goes fucking batshit.

He wouldn't look up at me and I knew something was wrong.  I made my way to the staircase and he couldn't walk down the steps.  I picked him up, presuming he hurt a leg and made it over to a local park in hopes of seeing him move around off of a leash at his own speed.

It was as if his age advanced by another 8 years and he moved around like an 18 year old dog.  I drove to the first vet to discover they had no openings and they couldn't see me till Monday.

Elliot at the Vet

Elliot at the Vet

I drove to a second vet and discovered they too were booked and they couldn't see me until Saturday at 8:00AM.   I called a veterinarian that I used to visit in town when he was a Puppy and they had an opening at 4:00pm so we rushed over.

We get there and much to my surprise - he jumped out of the of car and he ran around like nothing was wrong.  I was really confused and torn over going into the Veterinarian.  I opted to go in to at least have him looked at...  I went to a lot of trouble trying to get him seen and we were there so I walked in and explained to the staff that an hour ago - the dog was behaving completely differently.

Elliot walked in.  Had his temperature taken... they vet administered a number of reflex tests and he appeared to be completely normal.  Just before we took him off the examining table - they checked his ears and his gums and that's when the doctor noticed a mass in his mouth.

Something large that is visible to anyone who lifts the gums to take a closer look. I only saw it once and it will be something I can never get out of my mind...  The veterinarian calmly said "he has a tumor and it needs to be seen a specialist".   Time sorta stopped at that very moment...

It kinda felt like I got tunnel vision and a number of Elliot memories hit me at once and the only thing I can feel was my heart breaking into a number of pieces.  I sorta snapped back to earth when she explained we needed to get the mass tested and get a true determination of what it is.

I left the pet hospital and as you could imagine... I had a very difficult time coming to grips with what I had discovered.  I've spent the past 3 days at home with Elliot, going through an insane range of emotions.  Friday night was the hardest...  I got choked up walking him around the complex.  We spent a number of hours sitting next to one another on the couch and I found myself feeling completely devastated.

The past 2 days have been therapeutic on a number of fronts.  Elliot, is behaving like a normal/healthy dog.  My niece came by at some point too and they played together for nearly an hour.  I'm officially holding out hope for a positive consultation this week.

More soon...

How about Season 2 of Late Night Conversations?

I can't believe I haven't penned an entry since early January of this year...  I've drafted dozens of blog entries and have been meaning to upload a number of picture libraries - but life has been unusually busy.

What better way to come back, but to record a new episode of Late Night Conversations.

It's a back to basics kinda episode.  Just me... some silly observations on life and songs I'm listening to a lot lately.  Think of it as the start of "Season 2".

Reality Fantasy: The Challenge - Battle of the Exes 2 = Week 1

Week 1 is officially in the books...  I actually watched and graded he episode on Tuesday, but I haven't had time to recap the episode.

It was a quiet episode in respect to scoring...  there was a lot of characters and the show didn't really focus on drunken antics but spending a lot of time showcasing how the teams competed.

My team did really well... all three of my couples completed their challenge and one of them won the challenge - giving me 5 of my 10 total points.

The biggest player in last night episode was Dustin who picked up 50 points for revealing his Porn Acting history...  They lost the elimination challenge, but we learned they're in "Exile" and will complete secretly this season with a chance to get back in the game.

The CHALLENGE is back!

Co-Workers and I drafted contestants and this is how it shook out.

Draft Grades:

Team Mercernaries : B+

They totally went with the logical #1 pick in any Challenge Draft:  CT – but we all know that this is the episode where Diem succumbs to the Big C.   We don’t know how they will exit the show, so Ashley may score enough points to win the season or maybe CT will be awarded with another EX?  I really loved what Ashley did with her second pick, Jordan & Sarah.  They will push their collective bodies, 4 legs and 3.5 hands together in every challenge and elimination.  I don’t think however it will be enough to overcome her last selection in the draft: JJ and Simone  This is one of the teams that has never appeared in the Real World or Road Rules… but from a new MTV show called – Are you the One.  This was enough to edge their grade down from an A- to a B+.

Team Launders: A-

I loved everything that Launders did today.  She picked the hands down favorite to win the Challenge by taking Bananas and Nany with the 2nd overall pick of the draft.  She then spiced up her team with a team that can devastate you in challenges and verbal fights in the Challenge House: Leroy and Nia.  I especially like what Launders did with her last pick of the draft… the pickings were slim but she picked two people who appear to be athletic. The girl is kinda “athletic-suspect” but we wont really know until we see the episode.

Team GlendE: B-

Shout out to Eric who stepped in at the last minute and picked a team for Glenda.   We tried to call & face time you today and we simply couldn’t reach you.   We thought about having Elisa pick your team, but we all agreed that wouldn’t be fair so I ask Eric to pick you team because he watches the show pretty regularly.   You guys got stuck with the Third pick of the draft and Eric made a number of rookie draft day mistakes.   Exhibit A.) Taking Knight and Jemmye with your first draft pick.   Big ups for taking a deceased character, but he’s expected to live through the entirety of the show…   he’s surprisingly awful in challenges – despite being a former hockey player.  He’s also saddled with Jonna, a person terrified of ketchup.  Eric made up for it by picking up Thor with the 6th pick of the Draft.   He would never drop that far down in any challenge draft but he’s handcuffed with Jemmye…  who is a slight step above Jonna.  I only say that because she isn’t afraid of Ketchup.   I think Eric made the best 3rd pick of draft tho’.  Dustin and Jessica could make it farther than anyone projects and Jessica will likely pull 30 points in crying alone through 4 weeks of play.

Team Hurricane RhiRo: B+

This was quite possibly the hardest draft I have ever participated in.  Picking LAST on this thing is really hard to do but I went in with a plan and I’m happy how it worked out.  I think the key to winning Reality Fantasy Challenge – you need to do four things:  1.) Draft CT.  - This was not possible,  2.) Select cagey veterans who have won it before:  CHECK -  RhiRo selected WES and Theresa.  Only Banana’s has more Challenge victories but he’s kinda dedicated his life to appearing on this show and doing nothing else.  Kinda cool and kinda sad Bananas…    3.) Select a team with up and coming players: CHECK Johnny made it to the finals as a Rookie in the last challenge and he’s going into this show with that experience under his belt and a teammate who has incredible upside as a first time performer.   4.) Select the best rookie team available: CHECK – Thomas and Hailey made Real World: Ex-Plosions worthwhile and I believe they’re going to carry that baggage onto this show.  This team is forged together like STEEL.   I don’t know how they fell all the way to the last pick of the draft.  This team is built to win Second Place.

Reality Fantasy: Real World Skeletons - the introduction of Alicia

Week 4 of the Real World was high on emotion and low on scoring... the biggest development that occurred last night was the introduction of the first Skeleton - Alicia.  She's Sylvia's boss back at home and she kinda came off as liar and a loser.  Curiously enough... she seems to own some headspace within Sylvia tho'.  If Sylvia did't like her, she could always quit and work at another bar.  Alicia kinda freaked me out when she admitted to not being in control and being top dog in the house...  She didn't score any points and that was a good thing, seeing how Ashley is killing us this year in Fantasy points.

There were on Ballerz of the week this week.  The highest score was 30 points by Tony - who picked up 5 points for verbally fighting with Sylvia and 25 points for getting shit faced at the bar.

Sylvia dropped 25 points last night.  It was another crafty performance and I think she may be this season's MVP.  Here's how she collected her 25 points.

Victoria only picked up 5 points this week by verbally fighting with Alicia.  I'm terrified of what she's going to do next week...

Reality Fantasy: Real World Skeletons, Week 3: Sylvia just pissed her self in the confessional

It's kinda hart to think about this show and not think of my Reality Fantasy league...  by that I mean, I wonder if I could watch this show and still be entertained without tabulating points for shitty behavior.

I feel pretty confident in saying that I would... and that's due largely in part to seeing Sylvia walk into the confessional booth and pissing herself on the couch.  We don't currently have a point total for this in our Fantasy League - but I'm going to draw up an amendment this week and have everyone vote on it in the event someone else does it too.

Ballerz of the Week

Violetta = 75 points
Violetta continues to dominate Fantasy League play and is putting together an MVP season for the Ages.  She's averaging 58.3 points per episode (an all time high for Fantasy Reality Real World) and dropped an Episode Season High 75 without having sex or intentionally getting nude on TV.   We reached Violetta for comment and this is what she had to say:

Damn.   Lets look at the box score:

5 unintentional nudity
20 for getting hammered
10 for kicking a road cone into the house
5 for kissing a stranger
10 for a three way kiss
5 for verbal with Jason
15 for being drunk on night 2
5 verbal with Tony

Violetta's drinking is so intense that I actually have to grade her and the housemates on a Curve.  I first have to ask myself.... ok she's wasted, but in comparison to other "wasted" performances - where is she at.  When her roommies get hammered, I have to ask myself...  but how wasted is she in comparison to Violetta?  I can't believe that the show is going to potentially spice up her behavior by bring in an arch nemesis into the house.  It simply isn't fair.

Sylvia = 60 points
So team Mercernaries put together an amazing Back Court by teaming Violetta with Sylvia who put up another 60 point performance.  Last week, she crafted 60 points by dipping and dunking and showcasing 5 tool player potential.  This week she efficiently dropped 60 by getting hammered twice.  20 points the first night and 25 points the second night.  She then picked up 5 points for kissing a girl and 10 points for participating in a three way kiss.  Sylvia then took her game to the next level by forcing me to amend our established rules to capture instances of pissing yourself.

Bruno = 45 points
I kinda debated leaving Bruno off the list this week...  he put together 20 points by way of forceful kisses and 25 points for sex in the Real World bathroom.  He seemed gleeful in becoming the first house member to have sex in the house...  I'm glad there's video evidence that it was consensual and he helped our team slide into 2nd place.

Point standings thru 3 weeks

Mercernaries = 320
Hurricane RhiRo = 115
#TeamLaunders = 80

#1 Album of 2014, Never Hungover Again by Joyce Manor

I had never heard of Joyce Manor until May or so of this year...   I believe Ian Cohen had made a mention of catching them live a few days before this album dropped and everyone in attendance already knew every word for anthemic sing-alongs.

I didn't think anything of it until I fired up the record on my computer, worked along side it and then found myself tapping my foot along to the second song of the album: Falling in Love Again.

The song was under two minutes and before I knew it... I was finding myself wanting to air drum to the following track.   Again.. another song just over 2 minutes.

Never Hungover Again - weighs in at 10 songs & 19 minutes in total length.  It quickly became the album that had the most listens in 2014...  it was an album I would throw on to do something for 20 minutes at a time and I knew right away if I was spending too much time on something if I had heard a song twice.

I picked it up on Vinyl and discovered that a CD was enclosed with the record.  That CD has not left my Car deck in all of 2014.  I've actually acquired a new car in 2014 - so up until last week when we put in a Stevie Nicks CD - it was the only CD that had ever been played in my new car.

I listen to this record all the fucking time.  I listen to it when I work... when I drive... when I cook... when I fly across the country and when walk the dog.

I caught them live in October and they put on one of the best shows I caught all year.  It's the best album I listened to all year and you should go out of your way to own this record.

#2 Album of 2014, Singles by Future Islands

I love this record.  I love the track listing and the band's decision to harness and sound and feel that reminded me of Talk Talk, the Cure and Adult. when I listened to it in the dark.

My admiration for Future Islands goes back a couple of years now...  they released an album called On the Water in 2011 that completely took me by surprise.  I remember listening to the song Balance off that album and wondered how in the fuck would an entire room of people dance to that?

I remember reading something at the end of 2013 that the band was holed up recording a new record for 2014 and I made a reminder to look for it every week in the New Release bin...

Well a funny little thing happened when they got a ton of attention for a performance at Coachella and the Late Show with David Letterman.  They fucking killed it....

The band that I kinda imagined performing together on stage and Samuel T. Herring, emoting "controlled mosh" in a form of dance that completely matched what I thought it should look like in my head.

I honestly can't say enough about this album.  Like the War on Drugs album, I think it will be looked back on as a landmark release for 2014.
