In Appreciation of: Orange is the New Black

When my sister stopped in for an unexpected visit yesterday… we decided to start watching the new Netflix show: Orange is the new Black.

Who would have imagined that a show set inside a woman’s prison could have so many interesting stories to tell?

The show primarily focuses around an inmate by the name of Piper Chapman.  She’s doing time for carrying drug money for a former girl friend(Laura Prepon of That 70’s Show). It’s her first time in prison and she’s trying to find ground to stand on in a very unfamiliar place.

The biggest takeaway I have after watching the first half of the season is that femininity is inescapably beautiful.

Every episode takes time to round out one of the supporting cast members…  it sorta allows you as the viewer to not only empathize with their story/circumstance but see something leap out from within that you could only describe as beautiful.

I would almost liken it to Six Feet Under.  The start of every episode featured the untimely death of a person and over the course of one hour, we would learn something about the stiff in the box.  That minor character’s story would sometimes stand front & center and we were remind you how beautiful life can be.

The show also touches on other interesting themes…  race, strained relationships of every kind, sex and the criminal justice system.  They’ve seemed to have only scratched the surface on directions they could go.

Anyhoo… if you haven’t started binge watching this show.  You most certainly should.

The Bridge

After hearing a lot of positive things about FX’s new show “The Bridge”… I plunged thru the first two hours of the show and have not come to a decision on my commitment to the show.

The Backdrop

Without giving  too much away… the show is set on the border of El Paso, TX and Juarez, Mexico.

The show doesn’t closely examine border violence… it sorta hangs out in the background as an unspeakable circumstance.

There are people on both sides of the border, whom are going about their lives knowing that things are going to happen beyond their control.

the Premise

The show is about two detectives that are investigating a homicide that involved a body on the Mexican/American bridge.

At the end of the pilot episode… we(the audience) are led to believe that a serial killer is at work.

I considered pulling the ripcord at that very moment, because I wasn’t really interested in seeing a Thriller - set on a border town.

I decided to watch episode 2, mainly because I’ve never seen so many latin american actors speaking spanish correctly on an American series.

Where it went kinda weird

I don’t really know the limitations of FX…  I think I heard someone say “shit” in the second episode.

There were 4 or so words I wouldn’t go out of my way to say in front of my parents in Spanish…

There was also some on screen sex that didn’t really involve full nudity… but felt incredibly contrived.

The lead actress had a bizarre scene that involved masterbation… I say it was bizarre because it sorta lasted for 2 frames on the screen and they cut to her going to a bar to find a dick to sit on.

I didn’t really understand why they had to go out of their way to make her seek out sex…  and why they had her obsess about work shortly after having sex.

It didn’t really round out her character… It had all the cartoony trappings of policeman sex. I guess they wanted to remind us that cops in El Paso are just as distant as cops in other cities after casual sex.

The show slowly recovers from this described stumble… there’s more bodies and a killer is at large.

Plan to tune in for a few more weeks…  more to possibly follow.

Dinosaur or Deceptacon

Meet: Nasutoceratops

A new dinosaur discovered in the state of Utah.

His unusual beak and horn structure (that of cattle?) started a discussion at work about our favorite Dinosaurs.
My favorite: Pterodactyl - reasons are many…  I famously pronounced  the “p” in it’s name when I saw the dinosaur description without a picture.
My co-woker: Dimetrodon - a dinosaur that predates the “Jurassic” period…  think of a lizard with a sailing fin.  His reasons for the selection were sound and well thought out…  it occurred to me at that very moment that I knew precious fuck all about dinosaurs - outside of the ones everyone knows.

If someone came up to me and said:  ”Rollie, for $1,000.  Is Dimetrodon a Dinosaur or a Deceptacon”  -  I would have guessed incorrectly.

Which drove me to draw up the following Quiz of the Day:
Dinosaur or Deceptacon
1.) Cindersaur
2.) Megalosaurus
3.) Trannis
4.) Draconyx
5.) Deathsaurus
6.) Concavenator
7.) Straxus
8.) Gigantoraptor
9.) Supersaurus
10.) Vulcanodon

Fatty dilemma of the day

Can we all agree the Eggo’s are to be eaten in 2’s and that 2 eggo’s aren’t all that filling?
My magic number is four eggo’s….  but the fuckers sold me box of 10.
I’m now confronted with the option of:
  1. self-hate during my morning commute for having 6…
  2. having 4 and knowing that I have an underwhelming eggo morning in my immediate future…
  3. having two half assed eggo mornings by having 3 now and 3 later.

I won’t share what I ended up doing…
