The photo above was taken @ Wrigley field, shortly after Pearl Jam stopped their show (weather delay) to allow fans to seek shelter.
Thanks to Earth Cam : http://www.earthcam.com/usa/illinois/chicago/wrigleyfield/
I’ve been able to live-stream and listen to the show over the web…
10:44pm : I would describe the sounds currently pumping through my computer speakers as the sound one would hear if they walked out to a busy city street during a light rain? The sounds of Addison (Red Line) can be heard thru the website…
Tweets containing #PJWrigley - report that fans are assembling again and the show will resume soon. There’s also a report that the curfew has been lifted for the show…. so I may get to stream the band well into the night.
10:52pm - @PearlJam tweets : As an effort to keep everyone safe, show delay due to weather advisory. The show will resume once weather permits! #PJWrigley
The Sound of thunder is clearly audible from my laptop right now. Wind and drunken crowds are also audible…
Setlist - Thus far
- Release
- Nothingman
- Present Tense
- Hold On (rarely played live)
- Low Light (personal favorite of mine)
- Come Back
- Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In a Small Town (seeking tag)
11:13pm - Pearl Jam has not returned to the stage… They are now approaching a 2 hour show delay.
Here are some interesting photos that are making the rounds on the web.
Wrigley Field @ 11:10pm
Fans outside the park… waiting out the 2nd storm cell
11:22pm - There are sounds of “cheers” and police sirens piping thru… there are also reports that Wrigley is out of Beer.
11:26pm - There are reports all over twitter that tarps are being removed from PJ’s stage equipment. Show to resume shortly
11:48pm - PJ is back on stage. Fans are in their seats. Audio from the Wrigley Web Cam is horrible… I had hope to hang on a little longer and maybe make out what songs are played next…
11:56pm - Mr. Cub, Ernie Fucking Banks (my Dad’s favorite player)
Setlist Resumes
8. All The Way (song about the Cubs, penned by Eddie Vedder and played for the first time w/PJ)
9. All Night (outtake from No Code)
12:01pm - So it’s occurred to me after looking at the Setlist (thus far)… they’re playing of their deeper cuts.
10. Do the Evolution
11. Setting Forth (Eddie Vedder solo song, first time I’ve heard him play it w/PJ)
12. Corduroy
12:08pm - Huge group clap can be heard from outside of Wrigley as the opening guitar cords of Corduroy are strummed.
Corduroy, arguably the best track off of Vitalogy - is one of a handful of songs I always look for on a PJ setlist. I’m always curious to see where they kinda fit it in…
12:14pm - Pearl Jam slows things down again… opts to play “Faithful” from Yield.
13. Faithful
Listened to YIELD from beginning to end the other day and made a comment earlier in the week that it’s a Pearl Jam album I seem to like more and more as the years go by. I think it has a lot to do with the production of the album and Jack Irons contribution on skins…
12:20pm - Interesting development… a picture of tonight’s setlist is making the rounds on the net. I don’t know if they’re going to play all of these tho’.
14. Mind Your Manners (played at a blistering pace)
40 plus songs… I think that would mean they would play till 3:00am (with encores and whatnot)
12:24pm - Eddie just mumbled something to the crowd and has introduced a new song that will be featured on the new album Lightning Bolt in October.
15. Lighting Bolt (name of track per @pearljam)
It’s really hard to give any “first impressions” to a new song, when you’re listening to it via a public video web stream outside of Wrigley Field. That being said… I don’t believe its a standout track.
12:28pm - I’m really amused by the fact that I can be in my apartment… laying in bed with a cold beer within reach and still be a part of this show in a very odd way. Big ups to Wrigley/Twitter/Earth Cam/and the fans for letting be part of this tonight.
16. State of Love and Trust
OK, this song has and will likely always be my favorite Pearl Jam song… When I caught them in Dallas during their first leg of the Yield Tour - this was the only song I cared about hearing live. It almost makes staying up to live blog this worthwhile.
12:35pm - Looks like the leaked setlist is shaking out to be pretty credible.
17. Wishlist
Ya know… a lot of people shit on this song when Yield came out. I never quite got why tho’…
18. Evenflow
I’d be pretty fucking delighted if PJ announced they were doing away with this song. I might enjoy it more if they didn’t blitz through it so quickly when played live… I still don’t understand what the fuck it’s about. A homeless guy presumably, but if Eddie came out and gave a completely different explanation, I’d fucking buy it.
Prolonging this horrible tune is a guitar solo by Mike… masterbatory noodling that’s doing precious fuck all for me.
Srsly, this show may not end till 4:00am.
12:42pm - I didn’t get a time stamp for when Evenflow started… but it went on for quite a while… PJ is reaching deep into the
19. Leatherman (b-side to Given to Fly)
Never have been a fan of this track… just discovered that it’s only been played 3 times since 2007. I was hoping they would possibly skip this on account of the rain delay. No such luck…
12:48pm
20. Eruption - Mike McCredy solo (Eddie Van Halen - COVER)
Wasn’t expecting to hear this… dare I say pretty fucking spot on.
21. Bugs
I can faintly hear the sounds of an accordion… I’m in the camp that doesn’t care for some of “this stuff” on Vitalogy.
Just read that this is the 4th ever performance of the song… which I believe to be untrue.
It’s just occurred to me that I know and possibly care to fucking much about this band. Please know that I never go out of my way to listen to these guys… Seriously. Follow me on Spotify.
12:53pm -
22. Why Go
One of the few tracks I still enjoy off the debut album Ten… I recall having a strange argument about this song when I was dating Katheryn. She had a very strong objection to the song lyrically… I forget exactly what she said, but we agreed to disagree about its artistic merit.
23. Unthought Known
This track is off of Backspacer… an album that I’m pretty sure you don’t own. I barely fucking own it… the album was only available at Target and I got my copy for free when I picked up PJ20. That said… I’ve listened to this track on a number of live bootlegs since its release and its Top Ramen.
1:00am
24. RearViewMirror
My favorite part of listening to RVM after all these years is still the lyric
"I hardly believe, finally the shades… are raised…"
It just sorta hung out in the air when I first listened to it and then went back and listened to Daughter (also on VS) and heard the lyric
"the shades go down, in her head"
It occurred to me that very moment that the two tracks had a lyrical thread between the two…
An obvious thing in retrospect… but it meant a lot to me at the moment. Figuring it out on my own in a small bedroom, 20 years ago in October of 1993.
1:05am
"SAW THINGS! SAW THINGS! SAW THINGS! So much clearer…"
1:06am - trying to determine if I should see this thing all the way through or possibly go to bed now and risk living with the documented shame thru 1:07am….
1:08am - PJ presses onward and so does Sep29th!
I wonder if people in the crowd are beginning to worry about public transit getting them home and what kinda tip do you give a babysitter if you get in after 2:00am.
1:10pm - the tunes have stopped. I believe we’ve reached the first of 2 intermissions.
1:13pm - Intermission over. PJ has returned to the stage
25. Future Days (Debut? New Song? Cover?)
An acoustic and quiet like tune… citizens of Wrigleyville may think that the show is coming to a close.
26. Mother (Pink Floyd)
Acoustic guitars stay out a little longer… PJ has a rather long history of covering Floyd. Even more-so when Matt Cameron arrived in the band.
1:21am - It just occurred to me that the Set List (pictured above) has been altered a little bit… a few songs appear to have been cut out from the 1st Encore. 2:00am is officially in play.
1:23am - Want to quickly say that my favorite band (now and likely forever) to get drunk to in the dark is still Led Zeppelin. This is fun and all… but I’m beginning to grasp the fact that this is equal parts alarming and a terrible way to spend my Friday night.
1:24am
27. Chile Dancer / Crown of Thorns (Mother Love Bone)
"he who rides the pony must someday fall" - Andy Wood
1:33am
28. Porch
A number of years ago… Pearl Jam performed on David Letterman and then they did a live webstream (a first of some sorts) from the Ed Sullivan Theater where they re-worked PORCH as they play it today. It’s always been a crowd favorite… I only look forward to the tags they occasionally throw in after the solos before the last chorus. It’s 1:40am and they haven’t reached the “tag” portion of the track… sounds like they’re just going to do an extended version tonight.
1:42am
Sounds outside of Wrigley Field are filling with more and more people. Bars may be letting out… but I also think that the show is winding down. Shame that the set-list above wasn’t played in full.
1:44am
29. Wasted (Reprise)
30. Life Wasted
2 throwaway (IMHO) tracks from the S/T Pearl Jam (a.k.a. Avocado) album… There’s a weird melody in the middle of the song. Kinda like Pink Floyd actually… but it doesn’t escape the fact that its pretty fucking clunky. There’s a few guitar riffs in there that also remind me of Soundgarden too.
1:48am - Beginning to fade fast boys n’ girls… planning to stay around as long as PJ does… but it’s getting rough.
31. Black
When PJ gets inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in a few years… the song Black has to be one of the 5 tracks they play at said induction. Technically a deep cut off of TEN, seeing how it was never released as a single from the album. I wonder if that would be a first for the Hall of Fame?
There are apparently no depths to my music-dorkdom…
1:54am - Black is still being played… Mike McCready may never stop his guitar solo… so who knows when this song will end. I think the band just made a reference to a hard 2:00am cut off time.
I’m coming to grips with not hearing “Mankind” tonight.
1:57AM - @steven_hyden (rock critic, I admire) replied to a tweet I sent him 2 minutes earlier.
The exchange:
Rollie: @Steven_Hyden when PJ gets inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame - Black is one of the 5 songs they play right?
Steven: @september29th 20 minute “Stupid Mop”
Rollie: @Steven_Hyden well played sir.
1:59am
32. Rockin in the Free World (Neil Young cover)
2:07am
PJ is officially off stage. Say what you want about them, but very few bands would return to the stage after performing for an hour… delaying a show for nearly 3 hours due to rain/lightning. Then seek out permission from the venue/city/police - to play 2 hours and 20 minutes past the curfew.
Your favorite band simply wouldn’t fucking do it. Well, with the exception of Ace Frehley who once shocked himself while walking down a set of stairs - falling several feet downward onto the stage.
He took 10 minutes… returned to a standing ovation and rocked everyone’s fucking face off, because he’s from Outer Space.
Down the street from PJ, was the Pitchfork Festival and they decided to pull up stakes and call it a night when the storm blew into town.
PJ on the other hand, channeled their inner Ace Frehley and did what was right.
The Show Must Go On….
