New site / New Start

Greetings,

So I haven't had a chance to sit down and pen an entry after re-vamping september29th.com last week...

Things have been unusually hectic on my end and I with my parental units in the Alamo City - I got to spend an entire weekend with both Amos and Elliot by myself.

It did wonders for the soul...  it also reminded me how much it sucks to walk a dog in 34 degree weather at 5:44 AM.

Anyhoo...  I have a number of new things I hope to try out in the coming weeks and more importantly for 2014.

In the meantime, here's a few pics of Elliot and I getting back into the sing of things.

Parts Unknown to some... but I know a thing or two about the "D"

Caught my first ever episode of “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown - Detroit” Sunday night.  Wanted to quickly weigh in with my thoughts...

As a former citizen of Detroit, I feel the need to be over-protective of anyone making a critique of the Motor City.  I moved to Detroit (UDM) in 1996 and returned to Texas in November of 2005 to be closer to my parents.  My father turns 80 in April of 2014… I didn’t want to live in a city where I could only catch one connecting flight to Texas in his advance age.

A day never goes by, where I don’t think about Detroit.  I follow their local news with greater frequency than I follow San Antonio’s…  Up until this summer, I still had listened to Drew and Mike on my morning commute to work.

When I heard that Bourdain was going to feature it on his new CNN show… I prepared myself for the worst.

I had seen his previous show, ”No Reservations” on the Travel Channel. A show that showcased his smug outlook on all things worldly - because he hails from Manhattan and nothing can possibly blow a new part in your hair because you’re from fucking Manhattan…

My presumption was that the CNN show would be a little more ‘investigative’ in respect to culture/local flavor/politics…  I don’t know if Bourdain is the best travel corespondent for said topics, but I tuned in nonetheless.

In short… the show sorta seemed to scratch the surface on said topics. Detroit however is too big of a topic to cover in one hour tho’.  I felt that the show went out of its way to genuinely champion the spirit of Detroit tho’.

It was nice to not see Michigan Central Station…  it was also nice to see someone spend sometime with the Detroit Fire Department.  When you spend time looking at the number of fires and the resource limitations the DFD face, you can’t help but wonder how they go about doing their work day after day…

Then there was Charlie…  I’m going to opt out of shitting on Charlie.  He did a fine job of doing that himself.

Salinger : A Film by Shane Salerno

Finally saw the much discussed Salinger documentary by Shane Salerno earlier this week.

I would highly encourage anyone who’s a fan of Salinger (The Catcher in the Rye) or has an appreciation for contemporary American lit to watch it.

The documentary shed a little light onto the “reclusive” nature of J.D. Salinger, the effects that WW2 had on him, his relationships/romantic entanglements and the self discipline he adhered to as a writer.

The film also touched on how he coped with fame… fanatics who carried out senseless acts/citing the Catcher In the Rye… it also discussed a number of works that are going to be released between the years of 2015 - 2020.

Here are some of my favorite take-aways from the movie.

Just before leaving for WW2 - Salinger had a relationship with a young lady by the name of Oona O’Neil.  Prior to dating Salinger she also dated Orson Wells and then married Sir Charles Chaplin.  I don’t know if there’s a documentary about her life, but I would totally watch one.

I knew that Salinger took part in WW2, but I didn’t realize that he participated in D-Day…  that he witnessed concentration caps first hand and that he admitted himself for mental treatment after enduring a 260+ days of unimaginable hell.

He then followed this up with another tour of duty where he hunted down Nazis as an army detective.  While on that assignment, he fell in love with a Nazi and married her.

Their marriage didn’t last long… and it’s reportedly the basis for a Novel that will be released in the near future.

A good part of the documentary is about his interest in young women…  I found his break-up methods to be a lot more interesting.

Every break-up was crueler than the last.  Like by orders of fucking magnitude.   One of my favorite break ups… was when he was vacationing in Daytona with Maynard (who i think was 19 at the time) - she had made a comment about wanting children.  Salinger, pulled a Don Draper - stuffed her hand with two 50 dollars and put her in the first cab he could find.

When he wasn’t crushing teenage hearts, he spent a great deal of time writing in a “bunker”.  The documentary goes in depth about a collection of work that I’m actually pretty excited to check out.

My only complaint with the documentary was the editing.  It had a production value that was a little over the top in my opinion…  it felt distracting at times.

It actually reminded me a lot of the R.E.M. videos - Radio Song and World Leader Pretend (official tour video)

Anyhoo… seek it out phonies.

Kevin Devine & the Goddamn Band - Stubbs, Austin Texas

image

Kevin Devine and the Goddam Band performed at Stubbs last night and completely re-instilled my love for live music.

Just 2 weeks after release Bubblegum/Bulldozer - I had an opportunity to catch a band touring with just the right amount of material under their belt to see them put together an incredible set.

The setlist consisted mainly of tunes from Bubblegum/Bulldozer… with a number of re-worked Kevin Devine songs from earlier efforts before being backed with the Goddam Band.

Took footage of them performing the single “Private First Class” - it showcases how tight the band is performing together right now.

Highlight of the night however was the Encore Melody of Covers…

GnR’s  -  Sweet Child O’ Mine  (I couldn’t believe that Kevin got into the Axl character

This was then followed by a cover of: AC/DC - Thunderstuck

Only to be followed by The Counting Crows -  Round Here (Kevin - doing his Duritz)

Which was then followed by a Full Version of El Scorcho  - I sang along to every word and at one point - turned around and grabbed Kyle by the center of his shirt and screamed at the top of my lungs “and you’ll BRING HOME THE BACON!” -

he screamed in complete fucking horror.

KD&GDB then snapped into Metallica’s Enter Sandman…  a song they couldn’t stop laughing thru…  the drummer shouted to switch songs as quickly as possible - because he didn’t seem to like or know it.

The band changed gears inexplicably and dropped some Marley on us : Stir it Up

The surprise melody track was R.Kelly - Ignition…  not only did Kevin know every lyric, but so did every fucking person in attendance…

The best for last : KD & DGB - Private First Class
