Kevin Devine and the Goddam Band performed at Stubbs last night and completely re-instilled my love for live music.
Just 2 weeks after release Bubblegum/Bulldozer - I had an opportunity to catch a band touring with just the right amount of material under their belt to see them put together an incredible set.
The setlist consisted mainly of tunes from Bubblegum/Bulldozer… with a number of re-worked Kevin Devine songs from earlier efforts before being backed with the Goddam Band.
Took footage of them performing the single “Private First Class” - it showcases how tight the band is performing together right now.
Highlight of the night however was the Encore Melody of Covers…
GnR’s - Sweet Child O’ Mine (I couldn’t believe that Kevin got into the Axl character
This was then followed by a cover of: AC/DC - Thunderstuck
Only to be followed by The Counting Crows - Round Here (Kevin - doing his Duritz)
Which was then followed by a Full Version of El Scorcho - I sang along to every word and at one point - turned around and grabbed Kyle by the center of his shirt and screamed at the top of my lungs “and you’ll BRING HOME THE BACON!” -
he screamed in complete fucking horror.
KD&GDB then snapped into Metallica’s Enter Sandman… a song they couldn’t stop laughing thru… the drummer shouted to switch songs as quickly as possible - because he didn’t seem to like or know it.
The band changed gears inexplicably and dropped some Marley on us : Stir it Up
The surprise melody track was R.Kelly - Ignition… not only did Kevin know every lyric, but so did every fucking person in attendance…
The best for last : KD & DGB - Private First Class
