The Guard

When I saw the movie DRIVE last night, I reserved the thought that it would be a long while until I would see a movie that I would enthusiastically recommend others to watch.

The Guard is hands down, the funniest movie I’ve seen in ages.

The film is a ‘buddy cop’ of sorts but it shouldn’t be associated with the shitty buddy cop movies that have recently hit big screens.

The Guard revisits the dark (and highly inappropriate/borderline racist) humor that made movies like - 48 Hours - cinematic milestones that speak volumes about how politically correct we’ve become.

Be warned… the film is set in Ireland and the only American in the movie is Don Cheadle - who plays an FBI agent in search of some drug smugglers.  Be prepared to watch this film with the Closed Caption on if you’re not good with British/Irish accents.

Roller Rock Glass

Roller Rock

I’m fortunate to not live a life that drives me to drink…  I happen to however have in my possession a half gallon of Johnny Walker that needs to be taken down at some point.  This would help greatly.

Drive

driveWhen DRIVE arrived in theaters last year, I couldn’t find anyone to go and see it with me…

I spent months avoiding in-depth reviews and spoilers, so that I could watch it alone and formulate my own thoughts on it.

After seeing it this evening, I can easily say that this has been one of the most enjoyable pictures that I’ve seen in recent memory.

An instant classic, that will leave you with 4 or 5 cinematic moments that will never be erased from your memory.

I haven’t said that since No Country for Old Men.

What of the last 2 months...

Prior to January 1st, things on this blog kinda died down…  I took the entire month of November off to both read (all sorts of books that I’ll get around to reviewing later this month) and participate in NanoWrimo.

I didn’t complete my novel in the allotted time, but I did end up enjoying the opportunity to use that time to work on writing.   I’m not sure what I’m going to do with the 11 thousand or so words I have written up… I’m pretty sure will never see the light of day, but I think that I may finally crank out a ‘short story’ of some sort in 2012.

I had planned to get back into blogging in December but my cat decided to chew thru my new Macbook Air adaptor.   It took a week or for to order a replacement and before I knew it, the holidays happened and I just decided to take this up again in 2012.

Our Idiot Brother

When I rented Our Idiot Brother, I was kinda under the impression that the movie’s premise was sorta in the title.

A mindless comedy like - Dude Where’s My Car or Hot Tub TIme Machine.

Films I wouldn’t go out of my way to recommend others to watch, but mindless comedies I like to throw on every now and again after a long day.

Our Idiot Brother however is a dramatic comedy about a dimwitted guy (read: white hippie) who gets arrested (read: entrapment by the man) and after doing a little time in the poke - he decides to move back in with his family.

The dope never tries to do anything maliciously, but he manages to fuck everything up for his siblings.  Three sisters, all of whom “have it together” - but in actuality have it worse than the dimwit when we get to examine their lives.

I didn’t laugh very much thru the picture and I can see myself avoiding this at all costs if it’s ever on TV.  If hard pressed to rent or watch something (read: anything) on TV - stay away.
