A few weeks ago Sound As Language put up a post about missing the band Voxtrot and I couldn’t agree with him more.
I heard about Voxtrot pretty early on thanks to a tip from my friend Heather in the Bronx. During one of Voxtrot’s early east coast tours - Heather was tapped in suggesting some venues/places for the band to book.
I was insanely close to booking them for the first ever Motor City Shakedown scooter rally in Detroit, but we opted to go with a by the name of Rob Theakston who was starting up a little thing called Dorkwave.
Pulled out my early pressing from Cult Hero Records - 01 this morning and gave it a proper spin while making breakfast.
Managed to secure a ticket for this weekend’s Sold Out performance of Captain Cortez and the Tri Lambda Brigade’s season finale and left the theater looking insanely forward to the start of Season 2 next November….
I stumbled upon the Sci-Fi play by total accident last month when I thought I was going to attend an evening of Improv with my friend Chivo. I ended up catching episode 5 and getting sucked into a live action sci-fi soap opera.
Episode 6 *Spoilers*
Started off with both the Lightning Barron and Capt. Cortez attempting to travel past the edge of space in hopes of finding a special engine that will allow someone to travel thru space in stupid hyper-drive.
The time spent on set design for the 3 day weekend showing - was completely unreal. Unlike the previous episode where the stage backdrop wasn’t altered due to the Decorator’s (another play that was being performed there) residency, the audience had to use a great deal of imagination to see - 2 separate space crafts, a pirate ship and headquarters for the Tri-Lambda Brigade.
Episode 6 - cleverly used 4 (i think) interchangeable backdrops that made the immersion into their world so much more enjoyable. There’s also something very spot on about the casting of the show…. It’s hard to describe but this troop may be putting together one of the best original scripted shows in central texas.
Peep the opening credits below - that appear as an opening crawl for every performance.

So hands down, the best thing about today’s Comic Con was discovering an indie comic book artist who hails from San Antonio by the name of Mitch Clem.
He and his better half were sharing a booth where he was selling a book and two 7” records, one of which was also a 40 page Comic Book that I hope to pick up next week.
The 7” that I did happen to pick up was a 4 song 7” under the moniker of the Tigermilks. Mitch not only did the artwork but also did the vocals on the Belle n Sebastian tribute album.
The 7” is an incredible listen and highly recommend it to those who like early Jawbreaker. You can order a copy (baby blue vinyl) here.
Just got back from taking Elliot over to the Universal City dog park… We hit it up about 4 days out of the week, due largely in part to it being within walking distance of our apartment. It’s so rewarding to see him pass out in the living room of exhaustion after lengthy visit….
Attended my first ever San Antonio, Texas Comic Con this afternoon and it didn’t disappoint in the slightest bit.
It was so cool to see so many people come out in support of Comics, Anime, Movies, Cartoons and Video Games under one roof.
There were a lot of people in costume that I didn’t recognize but everyone there was very approachable. I even discovered a group of Star Wars fans that build their own costumes that go by the 501st Legion.
There were a few attention whores in attendance I could have done without but it was easy to overlook them when you had people who showed up in incredible costumes like the Henchmen.
Other highlights were the indie comic section where I found something spectacular I plan to share in a separate post by a local artist. For now I leave you with little Fett.
Want to extend a big birthday hug & kiss to my dear friend Heather in nYc. We’ve been friends for nearly a decade now and there’s never a day that goes by where I don’t think about her in some capacity.
She’s going to kill me for posting a photo of her on the blog, but my viewership is practically 10 or so friends who already know her so this will hopefully not ruffle here angel feathers too much.
I’ve posted a little Birthday Track in her honor by a band she turned me onto very, very long ago. It’s the Lucksmiths, covering the Smiths - another band that both Heather and I love. It’s fitting in a way because Heather has one of the most amazing collections of musical artists doing covers of other artists.
