The Generationals are coming to town...

It’s been a while since I’ve looked forward to a show in the Alamo City…  but Generationals are coming to town in support of their new full length album : Actor-Caster

I discovered the band late last year when I heard their EP entitled TRUST.  They pleasantly reminded me of a nYc band I used to follow by the name of Dirty On Purpose.

I haven’t picked up the full length yet, but if the material holds up live I plan to score a copy while catching them at the Korova.

Below is a track titled “Trust” of the EP that turned me on to them…  I also saw that they have a video out for their new single : Ten-Twenty-Ten.

I was overwhelmed with sadness when I read this morning that Clarence Clemons (E Street Band) had passed away due to complications from a stroke he suffered earlier in the week…

My first introduction to Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band was through the album Born To Run.  The record sleeve begs one to open the gate fold so that you can see who the hell Bruce was leaning on…

I recall being a little hesitant to listen to anything that featured a saxophone player…  I wanted to dismiss “old rock n’ roll” in favor of bands that were more along the lines of KISS or Motorhead at the time.

The album art however had a strange pull over me.  Something about the pencil thin helvetica font and the grizzly black n’ white appearance of bruce with his trusty telecaster in hand.

After hearing the opening track “Thunder Road” on side A - I became a believer.  Side B however had a stronger pull over me… thanks largely in part to the title track : Born to Run.

Closing the record was a song called Jungleland.   A song about a boy and girl in a setting that was unrecognizable to me in south texas but familiar all the same.

I still get goosebumps throughout parts of the track…  the piano trot at the beginning of the song.  The soulful sax solo by Clemons in the middle of the track…  and this lyric at the close of the song.

"Outside the streets on fire in a real death waltz

Between flesh and what’s fantasy and the poets down here

Don’t write nothing at all, they just stand back and let it all be”

7" of Love : The Dirtbombs - Insecure... Me?

image

Every now and again I find myself missing Detroit, Michigan and wonder what life would be like right now if I elected to stay and not leave.

Dug out my 7” copy of “brucia i cavi" by the Dirtbombs this morning and gave it a spin, to get my Motor City Fix in…

Weighing in at a little over 2 minutes.  The song  ”Insecure… Me?”  is short enough to allow you to drop the needle on the record and stay put for an entire listen.

It’s on my short list of songs under 2 min and 30 seconds - I want to hear played under a killer trailer for a movie.

Fathers Day

Just got off the phone with my dad this morning and wished him a very happy fathers day…   He informed me that he had his hands full with doing nothing and staying out of the sun.

I’m insanely fortunate to have not only him in my life but to have him as a friend and mentor.

I dug up a photo of him and Elliot from the first weekend I brought little “E” home.  It’s crazy to think that Elliot was only 5 weeks old at the time of this photo.

Don't Change

It’s truly alarming how many minutes I’ve lost in the last 8 months due to random screenings of Adventureland on cable TV.

I need to pick up a copy of this on DVD at some point…  watching this movie makes me think about my summer working for the Rio Grande Valley Whitewings (independent baseball league).

There’s something incredibly rewarding about watching the closing credits and hearing the INXS song : Don’t Change

The Power of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce

I was out running some quick errands today when I ran across this bottle of Tide detergent (that I ended up purchasing) that caught my eye….

I’m not exactly sure why Tide decided to do a “throw back” of their original scent detergent but I’ve seen a few other companies in recent months do throw back offerings such as Pepsi, in hopes of getting people nostalgic in the isles.

I opted to pick it up for the Mad Men era of the logo…   I think Bounce and Downy recently did some throw back offerings of their own too.

When Braid announced that they would be both performing live and releasing new material earlier in the year - I didn’t know whom to hug first.

Ordered my advance copy of the Closer to Closed EP earlier in the week and received my MP3 download link by email.

After having repeated listens to Closer to Closed in my car - I’ve come to the conclusion that the EP starts and ends with the stand out track : “You Are the Reason”

This is possibly now my favorite Bob Nana (on vocals) Braid song that they’ve ever put out.
