Masters of Sex - Season 2 Premiere

Guys,

Masters of Sex is back and I just got around to seeing the Season 2 debut episode...   After binge watching it a couple of months ago, I kinda settled into the episode not really thinking about the characters of the show and where the characters left off...

All in all, I thought the episode was pretty good.  The episode sorta set out a number of story lines that should make for a pretty interesting season.

Let me quickly say that I'm very stoked to see that Bill Masters has gained employment again and it looks like he will resume his "study" at a new hospital.   He went about doing this in a clumsy way, but it looks like he'll be bring Virginia into the fold in the next episode or so.

Virginia's character, in my opinion - is the most important character of the show...   this episode however did a great job of shifting the weight around.

Example:  Bill Masters, sorta seemed 2 dimensional to me.   He loves his work and he loves fucking Virginia.   He seem's to have gotten better at sex because of sleeping with Virginia - but he isn't exactly taking these lessons home to impress Mrs. Masters.

I the debut episode, we got to see him lash out at his Ohio mother and pretty much run away with shitty father of the year award.

Which is saying a lot, given that Barton Scully, the older mentor who is seeking electro-shock therapy to cure his homosexual ways...  decided to attempt suicide at home when his 20 year old daughter came in for a visit.

I was pretty bored with the development of his character last year, but I've kinda come around full circle on him...

Virginia didn't seem to get a lot of love in my recap, but she did an amazing job of reprising her amazingness on this episode by doing some incredible supporting actress work throughout the episode.

Looking incredibly forward to season 2

Took a number of days throughout the week, but slowly plowed through 12 hours to complete the first season of Masters of Sex.

Found the show to be incredibly rewarding to watch.  In addition to exploring human sexuality and gender roles - it came around and explored the strains and complexities that sex has on relationships.

I haven't had a chance to read any recaps on the show yet, but I'm curious to hear if anyone else is excited about this show possibly occurring within the confines of a 10 year (on screen) period.

I'm not suggesting that there should be 9 more seasons of this show - but the core of the show is the study itself and I would really like to see this show not overstay its welcome.   Something that Showtime shows have traditionally done in the past....  (Californication, Dexter, Weeds... for example)

Anyhoo - things I'm looking froward to seeing in Season 2.

Dr. Masters - must find a new place to continue his work.  The last scene between him and Virginia in the rain was pitch perfect.  I'm curious if we get to learn more about what his father did to him...

Virginia Johnson - is the most interesting character on the show in my opinion.  Not only is she the most sexually confident and tuned character on the show, she's an emotional compass for the show.  There are so many things pinned to her character and her performance was flawless in the first season.  Every decision she makes in season 2 will be closely watched...

Mrs. Masters - the character wants to grow more... Motherhood will undoubtedly keep her busy - but there's much more to explore there.  She's on to the connection between Virginia and Dr. Masters... Something has to give.

the Study - really curious to hear what myths get debunked next...

6 Episodes Deep (the Mid-Point) - Masters of Sex

Just concluded the sixth Masters of Sex episode - "Brave New World" and can confidently say that this show has the goods.

Digging the show on a number of fronts...

Human Sexuality: Quite happy to see that every episode ties back into the study of Human Sexuality.  Hellie informed me the other day that the show went to some great pains to let the accounts of the study unfold without taking any liberties.   Between episodes 3 and 6...  the study was removed from the University and then allowed to return because Dr. Masters had some dirt on the Provost...

Dr. Masters could really use a fucking solid from the wardrobe department.  Everything he wears is ill-fitting.    Mrs. Masters on the other hand is simply stunning.

Dr. Masters could really use a fucking solid from the wardrobe department.  Everything he wears is ill-fitting.    Mrs. Masters on the other hand is simply stunning.

The two central characters Dr. Masters and Research Assistant (read: no longer secretary) Virginia Johnson - have begun pioneer work of measuring Vaginal and Clitoral orgasm and the fun doesn't stop there.  The team is now spitballing ways to measure sexual release.  Orgasms have been reportedly achieved by cleaning ones ears / brushings ones teeth / rubbing ones tit...  skies the fucking limit and Dr. Masters is all about seeing it happen from the comfort of his 2-way-mirrored glass.

Relationships and Gender Roles: Relationships and Gender Roles are what really make this show so interesting to watch.  Dr. Masters is married on the show and he seem's to only be married because it's the adult thing to do.  Earlier in the season, we see a young Dr. Masters at a BBQ with the Provost - where he expresses his interest in wanting to study Human Sexuality.   This would be the late 1930's... and said studies in America were apparently unheard of.  The Provost tells the young Dr. Masters that he would have to wait until his 40's to do that type of work.  He would have to have an established career... and married to a woman.   All of which seemed to turn his stomach... but it sorta rounds out the character of Dr. Masters.

He's truly dedicated to his work...   He and his wife get pregnant and lose their pregnancy about 5 months (5 episodes) in and it seems to be splitting them apart.   He's pretty distant to begin with...  but this isn't helping.

While all this is playing out... all the characters are living in a world that seems like another planet to me.  The gender roles on this show completely floor me.   Which is kinda weird seeing that there are a number of period dramas - like Mad Men - that explore these themes...  but there's some a little more "punctual" about the subject on this show.

The idea of Women Doctors is alien.  Women producing their own orgasms is alien...  I still can't wait to see the look on everyones faces when a squirter participates in the STUDY!

Masters of Sex (2 episodes in)

Finally got around to getting Showtime and squaring away a few hours to watch a few episodes of MOS.

Intro: I really dislike the Dexteresque intro montage...

Casting :  really enjoy the casting of the show so far...  they've branched out nicely, while allowing the lead characters to interact with one another in tightly knit story lines.

Story: admittedly, I know precious fuck-all about sexual studies... but I'm shocked to hear that its younger than civil rights.

I mean... was Human Sexuality studies new in America?  Did we leap frog countries that invented positions and terms for simultaneous partners?

In addition to that, I find it a little frustrating to sit through stretches of the show where commonsense rationality is described as pioneer work.

That being said...  I don't know how many liberties have been taken to tell a better story.   I'm looking forward to seeing Dr. Master's face when he witnesses a squirter.
