In 2013, I found an Apple A Day poster that encouraged you to eat and collect a fruit sticker for the day.  After sampling 14 or so different Apples in the first two weeks, I became engrossed with the idea of sampling as many cultures as possible.  I decided to shift the project from having an Apple a Day - to sampling and collecting 365 Apples & Stickers.

I have sampled (and graded) the following Apples on a five asterisk scale.  Some observations are wordier than others...   If you have any questions regarding Apples or would like to send me unique Apples from your part of the States/World - feel free to contact me.

  • Jazz (Royal Gala/Braeburn) **** sweet/crispy, hard to bite into

  • Gala - * soft/sour, revisit this apple again. should be sweeter

  • Braeburn - *** Not too sweet/not too soft/just right

  • Granny Smith - ***  Tart/Crisp/Juicy,  Hardish to bite into… not Jazz hard tho’

  • Red Delicious - **  Thick Skin,  Pedestrian All Around… It Reminds me of Dad tho’

  • McIntosh - **** Juicy/Soft/Thin Skin/Not too Tart,  Just about as good as Braeburn

  • Fuji (Red Delicious/Virginia Ralls Genet) - *** - Tasty/Crispy,  Skin is a little tough tho’

  • Honeycrisp - ****  Large/Juicy/Sweet, Perfect match of sweet and tart. Filling

  • Arkansas Black - *** Dark Skin/Complex Flavor/Waxy Exterior,  The most memorable flavor I’ve had. Layered in flavors and I know I don’t like it.

  • Piñata (Golden Delicious, Cox’s Orange Pippin and Duchess of Oldenburg) **  Crisp/Not too Tart , Apple is straight forward…  kind of a let down in taste tho’.

  • Golden Delicious - ***  Soft/Juicy/Bland,  Pear like in many ways… very soft and surprisingly bland. Need another one

  • Jonagold - ** Hard/Tart/Crisp,  Didn’t care for it all that much… feel parched.

  • Cripps Pink (Pink Lady) - *** Hard/Tart/Juicy/,   The only take away I have is that it has a familiar taste to another apple I’ve already had.  Not very unique.

  • Rome - *** Dry Skin/Soft/Tasty, Pear like and the apples flesh has little red like veins that I haven’t noticed in other apples.

  • Ambrosia **** - Sweet/Firm/Juicy, Of all the apples I’ve had, this one was most enjoyable in respect to taste.

  • Cameo *** - Crisp/Beautiful Skin, my biggest takeaway of this Apple was its appearance.

  • Sweetness*  Sweet/Hard, Found this Apple for the first time at a local supermarket by my parents house.  Quite possibly the most forgettable Apples I’ve had so far…

  • Grapple *** - Beautiful Skin/Sweet/Grape?,  Grapples are engineered Fuji Apples to taste like Grapes. There’s something synthetic about it and it’s not something I would go out of my way to try again.

  • Opal *** - Crisp/Gold Skin/Tart&Sweet, This apple was quite rewarding.  If I liked Granny Smith Apples more, I would revisit this again.

  • Macoun *** - Soft/Flesh is White as Snow/Unique Taste,  So I just learned that this Apple is incredibly hard to sell because of short season of availability and problematic nature to grow without harm.  This Apple had an amazing taste and the flesh was soft and white. I can’t stress how white it was… it was like fresh snow. I should give it a fourth star for being so memorable.

  • Pacific Rose ** - Soft/Sweet,  this Apple should be Crisp and I suspect that this Apple stayed in my fruit bowl to long.  Need to sample this again.

  •  Kiku *** - Crisp/Juicy/Kinda Bland,  Just read that the Kiku Apple is a “sport” of the Fuji culture.  This is when an apple grows out of the main stem and the apples look a different from the others.

  • Pazazz ** - Sweet/Dimpled Skin, So I’m having trouble finding any websites with information on the “Pazazz” Apple.  My local grocery store claims its from the Pacific Northwest.

  • Fortune *  Tart/Dark,  Quite possibly the worst Apple I’ve had so far.  Insanely tart.

  • Acey Mac ***  Juicy/Small/Soft,  Picked this Apple up at grocery store by my office.  Reportedly related to the McIntosh.

  • Sonya **  Sweet/Crisp,  Sorta had hints of raw sugar?  I didn’t care for it all that much.

  • Lady Alice ** Tart/Lasting Taste,  This apple is reportedly “new”, in respect to being able to find it at your local grocery store.  I found it to be a little too tart for my liking.

  • Envy ****   Sweet/Firm,  Learned this morning that this apple is a mixture of a Braeburn and a Red Gala apple.  It took a while for me to find this culture after seeing it in stores earlier in the year.

  • Eve ***  Tangy/Firm, I wonder if Apple farmers actively avoided naming their apples “Eve”?

  • Divine ****  Crisp/Sweet, It kinda reminds me of a Fuji apple. Really good and rewarding… Lots of New Zealand Apples this time of year.

  • Tentation *** Sweet/Tangy/Firm, This apple has a beautiful color.  It’s sorta new and its from New Zealand… a cross between an Orange Delicious and Grifer.

  • Koru **** Soft/Sweet/Juicy, Another New Zealand apple and this one is maybe my favorite.  It’s a blend of Braeburn and Gala and it’s juicy flesh makes this my favorite apple in recent memory.

  • Lemonade ** Crisp/Tart/Juicy, Yet another New Zealand apple and this one I didn’t care for all that much.  Mind you, I don’t really like lemonade too much to begin with.  It’s like a Golden Delicious with hints of lemon citrus.

  • SweeTango *** Crisp/Tart/Juicy, A cross between a Honeycrisp and Zestar.  I didn’t dig it that much

  • Emergo ** Soft/Bland/Juicy, another New Zealand apple… i couldn’t find much info on the web about this one.  I don’t know the pedigree - but it reminded me of a Red Delicious without sucking as much.

  • Courtland *** - Tarty/Soft/Juicy - A little surprised to see how white the flesh was on this apple.  I worried that it was exclusively a baking apple at first glance.  It reportedly has many attributes of a McIntosh Apple and is used for deserts.
